Toowoomba CBD’s smart parking project has now entered its next phase after 194 new smart parking meters were successfully deployed across the city centre.
Toowoomba Regional Council’s (TRC) parking enforcement team will continue to assist parking users with the new system, but will now look to ensure higher levels of payment, time limit enforcement and safe and legal parking.
Tim McMahon, senior adviser for the TRC’s environment and community portfolio, said that with the commissioning phase of the smart parking project now complete, car park users can expect a return to a greater focus on regular compliance.
“Since Smart Parking was first introduced in the Toowoomba CBD on July 28, we have seen users become familiar with the system thanks to the continued support of council officers.
“Certainly the TRC wanted to give Smart Parking users enough time to understand the new system before returning to stricter enforcement of parking regulations and we have done that over the past four months,” Cr McMahon said.
“With over 133,000 payments through Smart Parking on 11 October and over 6,900 downloads of the Toowoomba Parking app over the past four months, Council is confident that users have been given sufficient time to understand how the system works and the new meters.
“A key element of the Council’s Town Center Parking Strategy is to use the latest technology to improve the customer experience, making finding and paying for parking more convenient and efficient. The strategy empowers Council to find the right balance to support motorists who want to park in the CBD and provide more opportunities for customers to visit businesses,” Cr McMahon said.
